The Plan - and why I'm doing this

Welcome! Thanks for coming to take a look at my blog. What's it all about? I am planning to charter a yacht and sail around Ireland in three weeks in May 2015.

Why?
Well, I originally wanted to do it in a boat I built myself and before my 40th birthday. That's not going to be possible for many reasons. The project to build the boat is a non-starter due to lack of space. I just don't have any! So I decided, in a flash of brilliance (stupidity - Ed.) last Monday that I could charter a boat and do it.

Over the last two years I have been chartering and sailing in the Solent. I've introduced a lot of my friends to sailing and most of them came back for more. I've gained confidence and last week I passed the RYA Coastal Skipper course. So I believe there's no reason I can't skipper this voyage. Is 'voyage' a bit too glamorous for this trip? Nah! The hard part is filling the boat with crew!

I've emailed all the people I know who are interested in sailing, and I'm persuading everyone I can. It's not a free trip and my crew will have to travel to Ireland from the UK. It's not cheap for them. Hopefully I can do it.

So why a blog, Nigel? I'm glad you asked, Nigel. The logistics of this interests me. I like planning and I thought it might be useful to document what I'm up to. How I am working it all out, what planning and arranging needs doing....whatever. Maybe I'm the only one who will ever read this. Want to come sailing? Get in touch!
